I bet you never even thought about this…
I know I didn’t.
I came across this article today on the movie, Dune. I watched the film myself on HBOMax and really appreciated it’s pace, characters, and set design (although I was surprised at the lack of screen time Zendaya received as a, “lead.”) It was a very engrossing film.
Then I came across this article by Khaldoun Khelil, who, as a man of Palestinian-Algerian heritage, loved the book series, film, but pointed out that anyone of Arab descent was erased from the film. I thought to myself, how did I not notice that? That is because I am not of Arab descent and was not looking for representation. That is exactly why Sensitivity Readers are so needed; to share points of view. Otherwise, we would miss so much.
We have embeded the article for your convince. You can also go to the website and read it directly: https://inkstickmedia.com/erasing-arabs-from-dune/
